Authenticity. This term has played an important role in modern existentialism. Jaspers held that the purpose of philosophy is to awaken people to the need to achieve authentic existence. Heidegger sought to specify the nature of authentic existence. In Spanish thought, Ortega held that the purpose of life lies in the attainment of authenticity. Among Christian theologians who have been influenced by modern existentialist thought, the concept has been much discussed in reference to its implications for Christian life and practice.
