Buddha Jayantī .‘Celebration of Buddhism’. Name given to the celebrations held in 1956-7 to mark the 2,500th year of the Buddhist era. The historical reckoning of this date is probably no more accurate than calculations concerning the date of the second millennium in the West. See date of the Buddha.
