Celebrated Chronicle. The oldest extant Burmese chronicle composed by Samantapāsādika Sīlavaṃsa (15th century). Following the pattern of earlier Theravāda chronicles, the text narrates the history of Buddhism in India, the Buddhist conquest of Sri Lanka, and several purported visits by the Buddha in the company of 500 Arhats to Lekaing village in the Tagaung kingdom of Burma. The same story is repeated in the Glass Palace Chronicle of the Kings of Burma. According to this account, the Buddha visited Burma at the request of two brothers, Mahapon and Sulapon, who built a sandalwood monastery for him. The narrative recounts how 500 men and 500 women then became Arhats, marking the establishment of Buddhism in Burma.
