Cemetery. The word is derived from the Greek word koimētērion, which means "sleeping place." Since it was used exclusively of Christian burial places, the name exhibits the primitive Christian attitude toward afterlife as entailing a period of resting or sleeping in expectation of the coming general resurrection.
