chen jen (Chinese). A term that literally means ‘true person’. Originally a Taoist term meaning an accomplished sage or thaumaturge, Chinese Buddhism adapted the term as one translation for the Sanskrit word Arhat, and also used it occasionally to refer to Buddhas.
