Dalai Lama V (1617-82). Losang Gyatsho (Tibetan, blo-bzang rgya-mtsho), often deemed to be the greatest Dalai Lama on account of his political acumen, especially in his dealings with Manchu China, though he is not renowned as an exceptional scholar. He was largely responsible for the reunification of Tibet after a period of upheaval and the political dominance of the office of the Dalai Lama and the Gelukpa school in general, especially through suppression of the Karma-kagyü and Jonangpa schools during his time. His reign ushered in a golden age of religious, social, and artistic strength in Tibet. Apart from his overt affiliation to Gelukpa doctrines, he is known to have been favourably disposed to certain Nyingma teachings and practices.
