Definition[4]

Doubt. The word "doubt" has its etymological root in two Latin words (duo + bito = to go in two directions, i.e., to stand at the crossroads). It is therefore not, as is often supposed, antithetical to faith, being, on the contrary, an implicate of it. Faith is, rather, a descant on doubt. Descartes insisted on doubt as a method for discovering the starting point of authentic philosophical thought. Christian thought may be likewise said to presuppose doubt. See Belief; also the article "Doubt and Belief" in the Encyclopedia of Religion ( 1986).
