Equality. The notion that men are "created equal" is susceptible to a variety of interpretations. It is abundantly plain that human beings are not born with equal endowments. Goethe and Mozart cannot be said to have the same endowments as a moron, nor is every man equally handsome or every woman equally beautiful. It is quite a different proposition to claim that all have equal rights, e.g., to liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Jefferson's claim that all men are "created equal" must surely be interpreted in this way. These rights, moreover, must entail corresponding duties. Humanity plainly embraces an enormous spectrum of development. Although much can be accomplished through education for the development of individual capacities, it can do nothing to bridge many natural inequalities.
