Exegesis. The term, from the Greek, means "explanation," and it is used of the process of explaining and interpreting in a scholarly way any literary text. Exegesis of the Bible is an important part of the training of both Jewish and Christian scholars and has been practiced from antiquity. Modern methods of literary exegesis have immensely enhanced understanding of the Bible. See Hermeneutics.
