Genesis. From the Greek genesis, meaning 'origin', opening and corresponding to the Hebrew word, Bereshith, this name is given to the first book of the Bible. Like other biblical books it is the result of a long and complex editorial process of compilation. Two distinct traditions can be easily discovered: the Yahwist and the Elohist, discernible by the respective use of the terms Yahweh and Elohim for God. The former is the dominant one, containing narrative relating not only to the patriarchal and later historical periods but to the mists of pre-history about which the Elohist component has nothing to say. The Hebrew word Bereshith is rendered to the Septuagint by the Greek words en archē, which may be understood as "archetypally".
