Definition[1]

go butsu (Japanese). In Japanese esoteric Buddhism, these are the ‘five Buddhas’ who occupy the centre of the maṇḍala. Although the contents of the two fundamental maṇḍalas—the Womb-treasury maṇḍala and the Diamond World maṇḍala—differ, they both place the Buddha Mahāvairocana (see Vairocana) at the centre, and then place a subsidiary Buddha at each of the four cardinal points around the centre.
