Hvashang Mahāyāna
Tibetan version of the name of the the leading Chinese teacher of a form of Ch'an, Ho-shang Mo-ho-yen, who was active in Tibet during the reign of Trisong Detsen. He was an advocate of the ‘sudden enlightenment’ position, which brought him into conflict with the predominant Indian ‘gradual enlightenment’ perspective. His views were defeated at the Council of Lhasa by Kamalaśīla and thereafter the influence of Ch'an in Tibet was eclipsed.
