Definition[1]

ichiji-fusetsu (Japanese; Chin., yi tzu pu shuo). A Japanese phrase meaning ‘not a word is preached’. This indicates the ineffable quality of a Buddha's awakening, which ultimately cannot be put into words, and indicates that, for many schools of Buddhism in east Asia, the words into which the teachings are put ought not to be confused with the experience of awakening or enlightenment (bodhi) itself. Buddhas can communicate the full extent of their realization without resorting to words only to other Buddhas.
