jiriki 

(Japanese; Chin., tzu-li, self-power). A term found in Pure Land thought indicating the individual's own effort in religious cultivation leading toward liberation, enlightenment, and nirvāṇa. Within Pure Land thought, this is contrasted with ‘other-power’ (Japanese, tariki; Chin., t'a-li), or the power of Amitābha Buddha to effect the rebirth of the individual in his Pure Land after death. Within Chinese Pure Land thought, rebirth in the Pure Land and eventual liberation are brought about by a combination of self-power and other power working together, while in the Japanese tradition after Hōnen (1133-1212), Amitābha's ‘other-power’ becomes the sole effective source of salvation, eliminating ‘self-power’ altogether.
