Khmer

Ancient kingdom roughly corresponding to present-day Cambodia. Though in contact with both India and China, the Khmers favoured various forms of Hinduism rather than Buddhism, which did not make any significant headway until the reign of Jayavarman VII, the founder of Angkor Wat in the early 12th century ce. There was a presence of Theravāda Buddhism thereafter, though the monastic population was decimated under the Khmer Rouge government during the late 1970s and early 1980s.
