kiriyavāda
Dictionary Definition :
Definition[1]
:
kiriya-vāda (Pāli). The doctrine (vāda) that there are consequences to moral acts. This doctrine, which involves a belief in karma, was taught by Buddha along with many other orthodox and sectarian teachers. Certain of his contemporaries, however, rejected the notion of karma and denied the reality and efficacy of moral choice (see Six Sectarian Teachers), holding instead to the rival theory of akiriya-vāda. Such teachings were condemned by the Buddha as erroneous and leading to immorality.
