Kucha

A small early medieval oasis state situated on the northern route of the Silk Road. Buddhism was established here at an early date under the influence of the Kuṣāṇa dynasty and Kucha soon became an important centre for Hīnayāna forms of Buddhism. Apart from a number of manuscript fragments found in the region, Kucha is especially important to the art historian for the volume and quality of paintings that have been found in the area. Kucha was also famous as the birthplace of the great translator, Kumārajīva.
