Kuśinagara

(Pāli, Kusinārā). The capital of the Malla state at the time of the Buddha, located on one of the tributaries of the river Gogrā. It was here that the Buddha passed into parinirvāṇa under a pair of śāla trees and was cremated outside this town. Shortly after the Buddha's death, the land of the Mallas was absorbed into the growing Magadhan empire. The town of Kuśinagara flourished for many centuries after as an important pilgrimage place for Buddhists, though it was all but forgotten by the 13th century ce. The ruins of the great Parinirvāṇa Stūpa were discovered and excavated by archaeologists in 1878, and the stūpa was later restored in 1927 and 1956 with donations from Burma.

拘尸那揭羅 [py] jūshīnàjiēluó [wg] Chu-shih-na-chieh-lo [ko] 구시나게라 kusinagalla [ja] クシナガラ Kushinagara ||| Kuśinagara. A capital city in the ancient state of Magadha of central India. In the north part of the city was Śāla forest, where Śākyamuni passed into nirvāna.
