Rakkhati [Vedic raksati, rakṣ to Idg. *ark (cp. Lat. arceo etc.) in enlarged form *aleq=Gr. a)le/cw to protect (Alexander!); a)lkh/ strength; Ags. ealgian to protect, Goth. alhs=Ags. ealh temple. Cp. also base *areq in P. aggala. The Dhtp 18 expls rakkh by "pālana"] 1. to protect, shelter, save, preserve Sn 220; Jiv.255 (maŋ rakkheyyātha); vi.589 (=pāleti); Pv ii.943 (dhanaŋ); Miln 166 (rukkhaŋ), 280 (attānaŋ rakkheyya save himself); PvA 7. -- grd. rakkhiya to be protected Mhvs 33, 45.
