śrota-āpanna (Sanskrit; Pāli, sotāpanna). A ‘stream-winner’, one who has entered the supermundane path (ārya-mārga) at the lowest of the four levels and become one of the four ‘noble persons’ (ārya-pudgala). Such a person is securely established on the path to nirvāṇa and has eliminated the first three of the ten fetters (saṃyojana) but still has defilements (kleśa) remaining. A śrotāpanna will undergo a maximum of seven more rebirths in the three higher realms of rebirth (see also gati; six realms of rebirth).
