Taboo (or Tabu, Tapu). In Polynesian religion a term correlative to mana. (See Mana.) Objects that are considered to have mana, i.e., magical or mysterious power, such as the tombs of chiefs and even their household utensils, are protected by taboos, i.e., restrictive provisions forbidding people to touch or in some cases even approach such objects.
