Definition[1]

Tantra. Originally a Hindu sacred text, the tantra in Buddhism refers to a series of ritual texts that were delivered by the Buddha in the form of discourses. They deal with the attainment of enlightenment, with acquiring magical power, and other such matters. They are believed by many to have been transmitted secretly until c. the 4th c. CE and then opened up to people in general by a group of masters. Tantrism is associated with Mahayana. (See Mahāyāna. ) In Hinduism the term is also used of certain texts dealing with certain magical practices related to the cult of Shakti, sexual and yogic in character and performed by initiates in secret.
