苦行
Tapas. In Sanskrit a term meaning "heat," it has great importance in Hindu thought. Heat is considered to have two forms: kāma, the heat of sexual desire, opposed to tapas, the heat generated by ascetic practices, more particularly sexual abstinence and the cultivation of chastity. Tapas is both the source of spiritual power and the means of attaining it. Tapas is greatly admired in the popular Hindu outlook. Some legends recount the dismay of the gods at the progress made by certain humans who have become advanced in the acquisition of chastity, since the spiritual power it confers can make humans vie with the gods.
