Tashilhumpo (Tibetan, bkra-shis lhun-po). An important Gelukpa monastery in the town of Shigatse in southern Tibet. It was founded in 1447 by Dalai Lama I and has been the residence of successive Panchen Lamas. It managed to escape the wholesale destruction of religious sites that took place following the Chinese invasions of the 1950s and the Cultural Revolution.
