誑To deceive, to trick. (māyā, śāthya, avañcana; Tib. sgyu): 'deceit,' commonly expressed in literary Chinese as 欺. One of the lesser defilement elements 小煩惱地法as listed in the Abhidharmakośa-bhāsya 倶舎論, one of the twenty secondary defilements 隨煩惱in the doctrine of the Yogācāra school 瑜伽行派. The mental action of deceiving others by lying to them; acting virtuous when lacking virtue, adorning base qualities so that they will appear as excellent qualities. A sub-function of ignorance and covetousness.
