Definition[1]

Universe. This term comes from a Latin equivalent of the Greek term to olon, "the whole." It means primarily all that exists in time and space. Therefore, although one may talk of many worlds, there can be only one universe. The term may be and has been used, however, in a secondary sense to designate a particular whole, such as the totality of whatever is under discussion, e.g., the world of mammals or the totality of religious ideas.
