Vṛjiputraka (Skt,; Pāli, Vajjiputtaka). Name given to a body of monks resident at Vaiśālī and belonging to the Vṛji (Pāli, Vajji) clan. The Vṛjiputraka were condemned at the second council, the Council of Vaiśālī, for ten unorthodox practices. According to the Sinhalese chronicles, this group then formed a separate sect known as the Mahāsaṃghikas, numbering 10,000 monks. See also Vajjī.
