謂圓實中道為應化之本源。中道之理為法界之實相,即離有、無二邊,中正不偏,動靜相即而出入自在,證此理者,能於十界自在現身應化,故稱中道應本。此係天台宗別圓二教之義。藏通二教則以斷證之至極遂入灰滅涅槃,不知中道之理,故藏教之菩薩特意留惑,通教之菩薩以誓扶習氣,而分別受生利物。〔天台四教儀集註卷下〕

(術語)依別圓二教之義,以圓實中道為應化身之根本也。依藏通二教之意,則實諦為偏直空理,三界諸法本在理外,依惑業因緣而生,故斷惑已,則三界諸法歸於空已。故菩薩欲永受三界之生,而度眾生者,或故留惑,或由惑之習氣勢力也。然別圓二教之意,謂十界諸法以中道之理為本,中道之理,為應緣而現者,故斷煩惱,而中道之體愈圓明,十界諸法顯現,隨機感而起不思議之應用。是曰中道之應本。
