乃指順流與逆流而言。輪迴生死，稱為順流。趣向涅槃，稱為逆流。詳言之，順流，即順生死之流。六道眾生，起惑造業，順生死之流而背涅槃之道，此乃流轉之因果。逆流，指由初果須陀洹斷以後三界之惑，故漸逆生死之流而趣向涅槃之道，此即還滅之因果。〔北本涅槃經卷三十六〕
