(一)全身舍利與碎身舍利。如多寶佛之舍利屬前者,釋迦佛之舍利屬後者。〔法華經卷四提婆達多品、菩薩處胎經卷三常無常品〕
(二)身骨舍利與法頌舍利。前者為佛之遺骨,後者係對肉身之遺形稱不滅之法身,即指佛之遺法,轉而敬稱一切大小乘之經卷。〔浴佛功德經〕(參閱「舍利」3495)

二種舍利﹝出翻譯名義﹞
〔一、生身舍利〕,梵語舍利,又云設利羅,華言骨身。謂如來應身滅度,既闍維後,所有舍利,其色有三。骨舍利色白,髮舍利色黑,肉舍利色赤。體性堅固,椎擊不碎。若菩薩、羅漢者,其色則同,而堅固不及。光明經云:此舍利者,是戒定慧之所熏修,甚難可得,最上福田。故人能起塔供養,則得無量福報也。(梵語闍維,華言焚燒。)
〔二、法身舍利〕,大論云:經卷是法身舍利。謂如來所說中道實相之理,不遷不變,無滅無生,[一/旦]古今而恒存,彌天地而普覆。人能至心如法受持,即是得見如來法身,其所獲福無量無邊。故法華經云:若經卷所住之處,皆應起塔供養,不須復安舍利,此中已有如來全身。是也。
