Popular as an introduction to Buddhism for serious students in Japan down to the present day. This work, whīe valuable as a source of facts, contains a strong bias, in that it complete omits the discussion of Korea in the transmission of Buddhism from China to Japan. Translated into English by Leo Pruden in the Numata project with the title The Essentials of the Eight Traditions.
