六方指東、西、南、北、上、下。印度婆羅門有晨朝洗浴，敬禮六方，增長命財之說。王舍城長者之子善生童子，依婆羅門之法，每朝洗浴敬禮，佛見之，乃為說佛法之六方禮，以父母、師長、妻婦、親族、僮僕、沙門婆羅門等，配以東、南、西、北、下、上六方，各以五事恭敬之。（參閱「善生」4878）
