'When the six knots are untied the unity disappears. ' The six knots represent the six organs 六根 causing mortality, the cloth or cord tied in a series of knots represents nirvāna. This illustrates the interdependence of nirvāna and mortality. Cf. 六結; v. 梯伽經 5.

據楞嚴經卷五載,佛陀嘗以一寶花巾比喻涅槃,花巾綰六結,而以六結比喻眼、耳、鼻、舌、身、意等六根,六根聚集而現生死。然生死與涅槃乃由對待而感之二者,故若解生死之六結,則涅槃之一巾亦隨之不存。

(譬喻)以一巾喻涅槃,六結喻眼等之六根聚集而現生死。然生死與涅槃,本由對待而感者。若解生死之結(六解),則涅槃之一巾亦泯亡。故曰六解一亡。楞嚴經五曰:「六解一亦亡。(中略)佛言:六解一亡亦復如是,由汝無始心性狂亂,知見妄發,發妄不息,勞見發塵,如勞目睛則有狂華,於湛精明,無因亂起,一切世間山河大地生死涅槃,皆即狂勞顛倒華相。」
