分別 [py] fēnbié [wg] fen-pieh [ko] 분별 punbyŏl [ja] フンベツ funbetsu ||| 'discrimination.' (1) Decisions, or conclusions (made regarding external phenomena) (Pali vinicchaya). This term is usually used with a negative connotation, referring to the mental action of partial and limiting rationality which hinders the function of the originally enlightened mind. To think in terms of difference (vikalpa, kalpana). (2) Dispute, argue, differ (Pali vivadati). (3) Guarantee or prediction by the Buddha of the future enlightenment of a disciple. (4) 'Discussion;' one of the nine (or twelve) kinds of scriptures (upadeśāh; 論議). (5) To distribute, to apportion, manage, arrange. (6) Analysis, decomposition, disintegration; distinction, difference (vibhāga, lakṣayati). (7) In a positive sense, to distinguish: right from wrong, the true teaching from the false teaching.

(一)梵語 vikalpa。推量思惟之意。又譯作思惟、計度。即心及心所(精神作用)對境起作用時,取其相而思惟量度之意。俱舍論卷二舉有三分別:(一)自性分別,以尋或伺之心所為體,直接認識對境之直覺作用。(二)計度分別,與意識相應,以慧心所為體之判斷推理作用。(三)隨念分別,與意識相應,以念心所為體,而能明記過去事之追想、記憶作用。六識之中,意識具足上述之三分別,故謂有分別(梵 savikalpa);前五識僅有自性分別,而無其他二分別,故謂無分別(梵 avikalpa)。阿毘達磨雜集論卷二認為三分別乃意識之作用,故謂自性分別屬現在,隨念分別屬過去,計度分別則共通於過去與未來者。
 但在大乘佛教,尤其是攝大乘論認為凡夫所起之分別,係由迷妄所產生,與真如之理並不契合,僅依分別,無法如實悟證真如之理,故凡夫之分別,乃為虛妄分別(簡稱妄分別)。若欲得真如,則須捨離凡夫之分別智,而依無分別智始可。亦即菩薩於初地入見道時,緣一切法之真如,超越能知與所知之對立,始可獲得平等之無分別智。此無分別智分加行(準備階段)、根本、後得三階段,依次稱為加行智、根本智、後得智。〔成唯識論卷七、大毘婆沙論卷四十二、攝大乘論本卷中、顯揚聖教論卷十六、瑜伽師地論卷五十三〕
 (二)梵語 vibhavga, vibhajya。區分、類別、分析之意。即欲分類、分析教法,而由種種立場來研究考察之意。

分別===(雜語)思量識別諸事理曰分別,是為心心所之自性作用,故以為心心所之異名也。法華經曰:「思量分別之所能解。」發智論一曰:「法歸分別,聖歸涅槃。」成實論三曰:「法歸分別,真人歸滅。」唯識述記七末曰:「言分別者,有漏三界心心所法,以妄分別為自體故。」俱舍光記二十曰:「毘婆闍(Vibha%jya)名分別。」三界之心心所以虛妄之分別為自性,即妄於無我無法之上,而分別我法也,故稱之為分別之惑,斷此分別之惑,謂之無分別慧。慈恩寺傳七曰:「菩薩以分別為煩惱,而分別之惑堅類金剛,唯此經所詮無分別慧,乃能除斷,故曰能斷金剛般若。」
