mudrā; seal, sign, symbol, emblem, proof, assurance, approve; also 印契; 契印; 印相. Manual signs indicative of various ideas, e. g. each finger represents one of the five primary elements, earth, water, fire, air, and space, beginning with the little finger; the left hand represents 定 stillness, or meditation, the right hand 慧 discernment or wisdom; they have also many other indications. Also, the various symbols of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, e. g. the thunderbolt; cf. 因.

印 [py] yìn [wg] yin [ko] 인 in [ja] イン in ||| (1) A seal, a stamp. (2) A mark, an indication, a trace. (3) In Buddhism, the stamp of approval received from a recognized master which admits the student to be in possession of a level of enlightenment sufficient to be a qualified teacher in his/her own right. (4) An abbreviation of the term mūdra. See 印相.

印===大毗婆沙論一百二十六卷十七頁云:印、名何法?答:謂如理轉變身業;及此所依諸巧便智。此中印者,非所造印;但是所有能造印法。此能成印,故說為印。如理轉變身業者:顯所起果。即是色蘊。所依巧便智者:顯能起因,即是四蘊。如是五蘊,為印自性。##二解 發智論十二卷十六頁云:印名何法?答:如理轉變身業,及此所依諸巧便智。

===(術語)又作印契,印相,契印等。用指頭作種種之形,以為法德之標幟者。由小指次第數至大指,此為地水火風空之五大。又左手為定,右手為慧,以此左右十指為種種之印相。例如標火德而結火印,標水德而結水印等。菩提心論曰:「身密者,如結契印,召請聖眾是也。」大日經疏十三曰:「此印者,即是法界之標幟。以此印故,表示法界之體,即名法界幢也。」補陀落海會軌曰:「左手寂靜故,名理胎藏海。右手辦諸事,名智金剛海。左手五指者,胎藏海五智。右手五指者,金剛海五智。左手定右慧,十指即十度,或名十法界,或曰十真如。縮則攝取一,開則有數名。左小指為檀,無名指名戒,左中指為忍,左頭指為進,左大指為禪。右小指為慧,無名指為方,右中指為願,右頭指為力,右大指為智。(中略)小指為地,無名為水,中指為火,頭指為風,大指為空。」【又】佛菩薩手所執種種之具謂之印,即三昧耶形也。大日經疏二十曰:「印謂所執印,即刀輪罥索金剛杵之類也。」【又】教理之決定者謂之印。如實相印,三法印等。大乘義章二曰:「優檀那者,是外國語。此名為印。(中略)法相楷定,不易之義,名印也。」秘藏記上曰:「印決定義也。」【又】印章。象器箋十九曰:「毘奈耶雜事云:時有賊來盜僧庫藏,並及私物。為無記驗,苾芻不知何時失物。佛曰:苾芻可畜其印,應用五種物為印,所謂[金*俞]石赤銅白銅牙角。佛言:凡印有二種:一是大眾,二是私物。若大眾印,可刻轉法輪印,兩邊安鹿,伏跪而住,其下應書元本造寺施主名字。若私印者,刻作骨鎖像或作觸髏形,欲令見時生遠離故。」
