Four kinds of hindrances taught in the Ratnagotravibhāga. The hindrance of the marks of conditions 縁相, the hindrance of the marks of causes 因相, the hindrance of the marks of arising 生相, and the hindrance of the marks of destruction 壞相.

瑜伽三十一卷十二頁云：一、怯弱障，二、蓋覆障，三、尋思障，四、自舉障。怯弱障者，謂於出離及於遠離勤修行時，所有染污、思慕、不樂、希望、懮惱。蓋覆障者，謂貪慾等五蓋。尋思障者，謂欲、尋思等染污尋思。自舉障者，謂於少分下劣智見，安隱住中而自高舉，謂我能得，餘則不爾。
