大慧  Great wisdom; supreme wisdom. A direct translation of the Sanskrit mahā-prajñā, which is transcribed as 摩訶般若.

(一)謂佛陀之大智慧。
　(二)為梵語 mahāprajñā 之意譯，音譯摩訶般若。〔三論玄義卷六上〕（參閱「摩訶般若」6080）
　(三)菩薩名，梵名 Mahāmati，音譯作摩訶摩底，於楞伽經會上，為一會之上首。
　(四)（677～744）為唐代南嶽懷讓之諡號。故後世又稱懷讓為大慧禪師。（參閱「南嶽懷讓」3755）
　(五)（1089～1163）南宋禪僧，名宗杲。（參閱「大慧宗杲」881）
　(六)（1564～1636）明代法相宗學僧。又稱大惠。（參閱「大惠」858）

Mahāmati 摩訶摩底 (1) Great wisdom, the leading bodhisattva of the Lankāvatāra-sūtra. (2) Name of a Hangchow master of the Chan school, Zonggao 宗杲 of the Song dynasty, whose works are the 大慧書. (3) Posthumous title of 一行Yixing, a master of the Chan school in the Tang dynasty.

（菩薩）Maha%mati，梵名摩訶摩底。菩薩名。於楞伽經會座為一會之上首，是對揚主也。佛地論一曰：「問答決擇無窮盡，故名為大慧。」【又】（人名）禪師名。宋杭州徑山之佛日禪師，名宗杲，法嗣佛於果圜悟禪師，高宗紹興十七年詔使住徑山，以二十一年事竄梅州，二十八年詔使再住徑山，孝宗隆興元年八月十日，寂於徑山明月堂，壽七十五。賜謚普覺，塔曰寶光。孝宗居藩邸師事之，及即位賜號大慧禪師。有語錄三十卷，敕入大藏。見五燈會元十九。圜悟嘗著碧巖集，大慧燒之。碧巖種電鈔一曰：「此書已成，學者走知解者多矣。大慧為救此弊一炬炳之，所謂雲門一棒打殺之高懷也。」【又】唐之一行禪師謚大慧。
