如意 (1) As one wishes; that which appears as one thinks, or expects (Skt. ātta-manas; Tib. yid raṅ ba). (2) The supernatural ability to manifest things as one wants (ṛddhi). (3) Aniruddha, one of the Buddha's ten principal disciples. See 阿那律. (4) A reference to the maṇi-pearl 如意寶珠.

(一)指稱心如意。
(二)指說法及法會之際，講師所持之器具。此物原為印度古時之爪杖，梵語為 anuruddha（阿那律），係由骨、角、竹、木等所製，柄長三尺，形狀如雲，或如手形，乃搔背止癢所用，以其能補手不能到之處，而搔抓如意，故稱為如意，又稱癢和子。然在我國及日本，又成為一般之持物，表示吉祥之意。在佛教中，法師於說法及法會時，亦持用之，猶如官吏之笏，用以備忘。據釋氏要覽卷中如意條所載，齊高祖嘗賜予隱士明僧紹一支竹製之如意，梁武帝亦曾賜昭明太子一支木犀如意。另據佛祖統紀卷六智顗傳載，智顗受慧思之命，代為講說般若時，慧思手中持一如意臨席稱讚之。〔優婆塞戒經卷五、四分律卷十九僧尼日用物、禪林象器箋第二十八類器物門〕
