為對念佛行者之美稱。日本淨土教稱之為「五種嘉譽」之一。念佛之人希有難得,故稱希有人。此係根據觀無量壽經所稱「念佛者乃人中之分陀利華」一說而來。北本涅槃經卷十八、卷三十三亦曾以分陀利華、大分陀利華比喻佛。唐代淨土教高僧善導遂根據上記二經之說,於其觀經疏散善義謂,分陀利華為美麗、殊勝、罕開之花,猶如念佛者為人中之好人、人中之妙好人、人中之上上人、人中之希有人、人中之最勝人。日本淨土教即援引善導之說,而稱之為五種嘉譽。
 此外,北本涅槃經卷二十六亦列舉六種希有人:(一)不行惡法、有罪而能懺悔。(二)作恩、念恩。(三)諮受新法、溫故不忘。(四)造新、修故。(五)樂聞法、樂說法。(六)善問難、善能答。(參閱「五種嘉譽」1188)
