samatājñāna. The wisdom of rising above such distinctions as I and Thou, meum and tūm, thus being rid of the ego idea, and wisdom in regard to all things equally and universally, cf. 五智. The esoteric school also call it the 灌頂智 and Ratnasaṃbhava wisdom.
平等性智 [py] píngděng xìngzhì [wg] p'ing-teng hsing chih [ko] 평등석지 p'yŏngdŭngsŏngji [ja] ビョウドウショウチ byōdōshōchi ||| The 'Wisdom of knowing the nature of (essential) identity. The wisdom of understanding the equality of all things, due to the realization of emptiness. The wisdom of embodying the equality of self and others, transforming the defiled seventh consciousness into wisdom (samatā-jñāna). Depending on this wisdom one arises the mind of great compassion (bodhicitta). It is one of the 'four wisdoms' 四智 in Consciousness-only theory. The four defilements of self-love, self view, pride and ignorance are extinguished.
梵語 samatā-jñāna。又作平等智。乃四智心品之一,五智之一。指體悟自、他平等之智。即轉第七末那識所得之智慧,依此智慧而了知一切事相及自他皆平等,乃生起大慈悲心。佛地論卷三謂平等性智乃觀自、他一切皆平等,大慈大悲恆常相互契合而無間斷,故建立佛地「無住涅槃」(不住於生死、涅槃之涅槃)。隨諸有情之所樂,示現自、他受用之身與土等種種影像。對於初地以上之菩薩,示現他受用之身土,常行大慈大悲之化益。心地觀經卷二(大三‧二九八下):「平等性智,轉我見識得此智慧。是以能證自佗平等二無我性,如是名為平等性智。」
此外,密教所建立之五智,其中平等性智又作灌頂智,為南方寶生佛之智。祕藏記卷上本(大八六‧二中):「平等性智,清淨智水,不簡情、非情故,彼此同如故,常住不變故,名曰平等性智。」(參閱「五智」1161、「四智心品」1771)
如來四智之一,即轉末那識的我見,證自他平等之理所得的智慧。
