印度古代二十種外道之一,彼等以水為萬物之生因。此外道以水為萬物之根本,能生天地、有情無情等一切物,下至阿鼻地獄,上至阿迦尼吒天皆以水為主;又水能生物,亦能壞物,故稱涅槃。據大日經卷一住心品、大日經疏卷一載,於三十種外道中之第二地等變化外道,計執地、水、火、風、空等五大為真實,且各為眾生萬物之生因,若供養承事,乃得解脫。其中,計執水之外道,恐係相當於服水論師。〔中觀論疏卷三本、外道哲學〕
