法空 The emptiness of elemental constructs; emptiness of objective entities. Synonymous with 法無我. the seminal Mahāyāna Buddhist position that says that not only do individual beings lack inherent selfhood (我空), but the compositional elements of the world from which beings are comprised also lack inherent selfhood. (dharma-śūnyatā). This is considered by Mahayanists to be a level of insight that distinguishes from the practitioners of the two vehicles, who are only able to perceive the emptiness of person 我空. In terms of the two hindrances 二障 in Yogācāra Buddhism, the insight of emptiness of elemental constructs is important for the removal of noetic hindrances 所知障.

諸法緣起性空,為二空或三空之一。緣起性空是說宇宙間一切萬法都是緣起的,緣起的諸法,其性本空,無真實的自體可得。菩薩得此法空智慧,就能破除法執。

指諸法之自性為空。又作法無我(梵 dharma-nairātmya)。為二空之一,三空之一。法空可從一切法無我與因緣生等二義論之。大毘婆沙論卷九(大二七‧四五中):「尊者世友說言:『我不定說諸法皆空,定說一切法皆無我。』問:『若非我行相與空行相,俱能緣一切法者,此二行相有何差別?』答:『非我行相對治我見,空行相對治我所見。』」於說一切有部,認為法體恆有,故不說諸法皆空,而觀一切法無我,以對治我見。然成實論卷十二滅法心品、瑜伽師地論卷九十三等謂,五蘊等之法無我,無實在不變之自性,故為空。
又大乘義章卷一「二無我義」中,就四宗來分別空之義:(一)毘曇立性宗,僅說明生空,而不說法空。(二)成實破性宗,具說明二空。謂苦空無常等之集成諸法,稱為法和合。法和合之中,空無定性,故為法空。(三)般若破相宗,亦說二空。謂不須待苦空無常等之離散破壞,凡假名之諸法即為空。(四)顯實宗,亦說二空。分為二門:(1)依持門,妄想法之空,稱為眾生空;所依之真實寂,稱為法空。(2)緣起門,真如之體寂,稱為法空;緣用之寂滅,稱為眾生空。其中,破性宗之空為析空,破相宗之空為體空,顯實宗之依持門之二空為三性三無性,緣起門之二空為真如之體用。〔大智度論卷六、卷三十一、瑜伽師地論卷九十、顯揚聖教論卷十六〕(參閱「二空」202、「空」3467、「無我」5087)
