為齋供冥眾、弔祭亡者所讀誦之文章。又作齋文。亦有於乾旱時為祈雨，或為驅逐邪魅、祈求幸福等而作之祭文。我國六朝以來，即有作祭文弔亡靈之制，如昭明文選即有祭文類。於禪林，祭文由喪司書記撰作。〔禪林象器箋文疏門〕
