義淵 Gien, A master of the Hossō 法相 sect in Japan. He was abandoned in infancy but found and taken to a palace of Emperor Tenchi, where he was raised. He entered the priesthood by imperial order and studied Hossō under Chihō of the Gangōji in Nara. In 703 he was invested with the title of Sōjō and died in 728. His disciples include Gyōji and Rōben.
