能詮  That which is expressed in words. Sentences that explain the meaning and content of the sutras and so forth. As contrasted to so-ch'uan 所詮. The explanation of the meaning of the sutras and śāstras, as opposed to the sutras and śāstras explaining something.

「所詮」之對稱。詮者，詮釋經典之文句，以其能解釋、顯現經中之義理，故稱為能詮；反之，被解釋、顯現之義理，則稱為所詮。〔四教義卷二、玄應音義卷二十三〕（參閱「能所」4296）
