臨濟宗 [py] Lin2jì zōng [wg] Lin-chi tsung [ko] 림제종 Imje chong [ja] リンザイシュウ Rinzai shū ||| The Linji zong school of Chinese Chan Buddhism, named after its founder Linji Yixuan 臨濟義玄. The Linji stream of Buddhism was one of the most prosperous in East Asia, enjoying strong popularity in China, Korea and Japan. One of the Five Houses of Chinese Chan, and one of the thirteen Japanese Buddhist sects. Although not surviving as a distinct tradition in Korea, it is Imje chong soteriology which ended up dominating the Korean sŏn tradition within the Chogye 曹溪 school. In Japan, the Rinzai school, along with the Sōtō 曹洞 school, became one of the two major streams of Zen which survive to the present. The Linji school in all three East Asian countries was often characterized by anti-scholarly, iconoclastic attitudes.

略稱濟宗。禪宗五家七宗之一,日本十三宗之一。以唐代臨濟義玄(?~867)為宗祖。屬南宗南嶽法系。義玄先參黃蘗希運,未久又禮謁高安大愚、溈山靈祐等,後還黃蘗,受其印可。唐宣宗大中八年(854)住鎮州臨濟院,設三玄三要、四料簡等禪法接化徒眾,以機鋒峭峻著稱當世,遂成臨濟宗。中唐以後,此宗門風興隆,蔚成一大宗派。
「四賓主」、「四料簡」與「四照用」為本宗經常使用之傳教方法。「四賓主」乃通過師生(或賓主)問答之方法,衡量雙方悟境之深淺。「四料簡」、「四照用」則是針對悟境程度(對我、法之態度)不同之參學者進行說教之方式。接引學人之方法,單刀直入,機鋒峻烈。自義玄用棒喝,以至宗杲提倡看話(公案,即禪祖語錄),皆以迅速手段或警句使學人省悟。其機鋒銳利,與曹洞宗之「默照暗推」迥異,故頗受武人、俗士所好,將士、政客等亦多參此宗禪法。本宗即以禪風自由,至清代而成為我國禪宗之主流。
義玄之法嗣有興化存獎、三聖慧然、灌谿志閑等二十二人,存獎為其首座,慧然受義玄付囑,編集語錄。存獎之下,經寶應慧顒傳至風穴延沼,於後唐長興二年(931),住廣慧寺領眾;其法嗣首山省念常為頭陀行,法席之盛冠於天下,門人有葉縣歸省、廣慧元璉、谷隱蘊聰、汾陽善昭等十六人歸省門下有八人,其中,浮山法遠倡九帶、十六顯之說。善昭初歷參七十一善知識,後投首山契悟,住汾州太平寺,以三句四句、三訣、十八唱等機用接化學徒,號稱天下第一;其下俊秀頗多,有石霜楚圓、瑯琊慧覺、大愚守芝等。慧覺與雪竇重顯並稱二甘露門。楚圓以法令嚴肅、方法險絕稱名,其門人以黃龍慧南、楊岐方會最著,二人各創黃龍派、楊岐派,宋以後頗盛,與曹洞、雲門等宗並立。
二世紀末,日僧明菴榮西入宋,謁黃龍七世法孫虛菴懷敞,傳黃龍派禪法;返日後,於京都創立建仁寺,為圓、密、禪三宗兼學之道場。此外,俊芿(1166~1227)亦入宋,受法於楊岐派下第七世之蒙菴元聰;返日後,於泉涌寺弘傳戒律與禪法。南宋末年我國禪僧渡日者甚眾,多傳楊岐派禪法。日本鎌倉時期(1192~1333)之禪宗二十四流派中,有二十流派屬於楊岐派系統,黃龍派則僅榮西一流。又明末清初之際,楊岐派下第二十四世隱元隆琦,於承應三年(1654)東渡日本,別立黃蘗宗。〔臨濟宗旨、五燈會元卷十一、卷十二、卷十七至卷二十、本朝僧寶傳、延寶傳燈錄、扶桑禪林僧寶傳〕
