覺觀 (1) "Coarse apprehension" and "fine analysis." This is the earlier Chinese rendering of the Sanskrit vitarka and vicāra, which was later rendered as xunsi 尋伺. Jue 覺 is the coarse mental function of making a supposition or inference, whīe guan 觀 is the function of fine analysis. Together they act as hindrances to meditation. (2) 覺 and 觀 taken as the causes of language. When one is free from the mind of supposition and analysis, there is no language. In this sense, they are considered as hindrances to true meditation.
新譯作尋伺,舊譯作覺觀,麤思名覺,細思名觀,二者都能擾亂定心。
Awareness and pondering, acts of intellectuation, later called 尋伺, both of them hindrances to abstraction, or dhyāna. They are described as 麤 and 細, general and particular, respectively.
