(一)顯教謂為大智度論之略稱，以之為解釋大品般若經之作；於密教則為釋摩訶衍論之略稱，以之為大乘起信論之注釋書。
(二)解釋經典之論書，亦稱釋論。
(三)「宗論」之對稱。就一經總括宗旨而建立法義，稱為宗論；反之，一一解釋其文義，則稱釋論。
