Police have charged a man with the murder of a Buddhist monk who was bashed at a Perth suburban park where he went to meditate.

The 48-year-old monk, Buu Lieu, also known as Paul, died from his injuries in hospital on Tuesday after being attacked earlier this month at Bibra Lake, in Perth's southeast.

He was found by a bike rider in the car park at Bibra Lake Regional Park on January 10.

Police said they had charged a 37-year-old man from the neighbouring suburb of Coolbellup with Mr Lieu's murder.

They said the man's arrest followed an extensive investigation and public assistance.

The man was taken into custody to appear in Fremantle Magistrates Court on Friday.

Mr Lieu had been living with his mother and sister, who last saw him late on the night before the attack.

Family and friends said he would often go to the Bibra Lake area to meditate and walk around the lake.
