The Buddhist Sangha of Vietnam on Sunday inaugurated the Vietnam Buddhist Institute’s second campus in Ho Chi Minh City, marking the completion of the first phase of construction for the project in Minh Xuan Ward of the city’s Binh Chanh District.

Vietnam’s Supreme Dharma Patriarch Venerable Elder Thich Pho Tue attended the ceremony, along with other senior Buddhist monks. Other guests included the former Party chief of Ho Chi Minh City Le Thanh Hai, standing deputy secretary of the city’s party committee Tat Thanh Cang, and health minister Nguyen Thi Kim Tien.

Construction of the Vietnam Buddhist Institute’s second Ho Chi Minh City campus was launched on 4 November 2012. The first phase of the project includes the main administrative building, a lecture hall wing, residences for monks and nuns, a temporary main shrine, and a kitchen hall. The site, which occupies a total of 20 acres, will be put into use from the beginning of summer. Total construction costs for the first phase are estimated at US$8 million.

Another 35 acres of land have been allocated for the project’s second phase, which will include faculty buildings, a 3,000-seat conference hall, a permanent main shrine that will have the capacity to accommodate 2,500 people, a library that is projected to hold 1 million books, and a 150-room guesthouse for international visitors. Construction costs for the second phase are estimated at US$44.64 million.
